Current Situation

Information and communication technology for the design of environments for ageing is of high social relevance, both with respect to the quality of life of broad parts of the population and for the economic advancement of the state Lower Saxony.

The aim of the Lower Saxony Research Network Design of Environments for Ageing - Information and Communication Technologies for Promoting and Sustaining Quality of Life, Health and Self-sufficiency in the Second Half of Life - (GAL, project duration 2008-2013) was,

  • to identify, to enhance and to evaluate new applications of information and communication technology for design of environments for ageing (scientific aim) as well as

  • to enable the Lower Saxony Research Institutions to particpate as a leading actor in national and international research projects within this topic (research strategy aim).

 Additional objectives for years 4 and 5 are:

  • Technical/methodical innovation: Basic research oriented studies of technical and social-scientific issues identified in the years 1 to 3;

  • Transfer into the environment of older people: selected prototypes will be integrated and systematically evaluated in concrete living and domestic environments (new ways of life);

  • Transfer into care structures: Assisting systems will be tested in selected care scenarios and processes. Application possibilities for new assisting technologies will be explored in cooperation with geriatric clinics, care facilities and other health care providers in Lower Saxony (new forms of care);

  • Constitution of a long term subject group (cohort): A long term study to evaluate the impact of assisting technologies especially in rural areas will be prepared (in the Vechta region as recommended by the reviewers).
